A powerful, easily recognizable logo is one of the most important marketing tools a company can have. Logos of various sorts have been used for centuries, ever since the ancient Romans stamped their bricks with the maker’s emblem, place of origin and intended destination. Over the years, the art of the logo has progressed, and today’s company logos and trademarks are artistic works of advertising brilliance incorporating sophisticated elements of infographics and design. Following are six of the world’s most recognized logos.


Arguably the best-known logo in the world, Coca-Cola’s trademark in its original form was designed by the assistant of company founder John Pemberton, who thought two “Cs” in a visually appealing Spenserian script would work well in advertising. Attractive to a young audience, its simple two-tone color scheme incorporates red for youth, passion and vitality and white for charm and elegance.


The biggest technology company in the world, Apple owns a logo with an interesting history. Originally a complex design showing Sir Isaac Newton and the legendary apple falling to the ground, the company’s symbol simplified drastically within a few years to an easily recognizable graphic of an apple, originally in colored stripes, with a bite taken out of it. In its current elegant glass-themed version the logo effectively represents innovation, techno-supremacy and authenticity.


Fast food brand giant McDonalds owns one of the most instantly recognizable logos in the history of advertising. Associated worldwide with American culture, the logo’s simple, eye-catching golden arches are intended to symbolize dominance, elegance, friendliness and professionalism. Infused with a certain nostalgia, the arches reflect the brand’s beginnings as a simple hamburger stand. The yellow color stands for happiness and optimism, while red symbolizes health, energy, and vigor.


Nike’s legendary Swoosh logo is probably the most valuable brand symbol in the sports industry, and is unique in that it enables the viewer to see swift movement in its simple design. Ideal for athletic footwear, the logo symbolizes the wing from the legendary statue of Greek goddess of victory Nike, and calls to mind victory on today’s “battlefields”: gymnasiums, tracks and athletic matches. Traditionally used with a red and white color palette, today’s Swoosh comes in a variety of hues.

geGeneral Electric

Designed in the 1890s, General Electric’s iconic logo contains most elements of the original design. Featuring a somewhat vintage feel, the emblem packs a powerful punch with its timeless circular shape and the feeling of motion created by design activity close to the circle’s perimeter. Interconnected initials and soothing blue color lend a classic, comfortable, trustworthy visual appeal infused with an interesting “art nouveau” feel.

The foundation of any branding and advertising campaign, a truly timeless company logo remains fresh and new, avoiding trendy imagery, busy color schemes and dated fonts. While it may undergo some updating through the years, a logo that stands the test of time is generally broadly understood, easily recognized and universally respected.
