Originally called The Ophelia Project, GENaustin (the Girls Empowerment Network) was created in 1996 by 12 concerned mothers raising adolescent girls in Austin, Texas. These mothers met after reading Reviving Ophelia, a book by Dr. Mary Pipher, to address an increasing trend among middle school aged girls – a systematic decline and sometimes permanent loss of self-esteem, the outcome of which can be devastating: epidemic levels of anorexia/bulimia, selfmutilation, depression, low academic achievement, teen pregnancy, and drug abuse. GENaustin supports and encourages middle school girls through their clubGEN program, We Are Girls conference, and other workshops and programs.
Their Mission
GEN’s mission is to support and guide girls to make wise choices as they navigate the unique pressures of girlhood.
Why we support GENaustin
Alt Creative believes that it is necessary to support the next generation of women. Our owner, Lindsey Tyner has met the girls that GENaustin supports by speaking at their Career week. It is truly inspiring to meet these young women and to be a part of their growth.
At Alt Creative, we give a total of 10% of the final bill of all custom designed web projects to charitable causes. 5% will go to the charity of our clients choosing and the other 5% will go to one of our preferred charities. And that’s not all we are doing for the community and environment.
